Standardised items are catalogued items and conform to international sizing standards such as ISO, DIN, VDI, NAAMS, etc. It should be used in the design of die sets and moulds as sizes and tolerances are standard and it makes the design of dies/moulds easier – and replacement parts are more readily available. Our range of punches are made to international standards and with world class steels including carbide. Base materials that are more compatible with certain coatings are used rather than traditional steels, and these steels are still tough, chip resistant and of high strength to handle punch stresses. Punches can be supplied as straight or stepped tips, in un-coated or coated form.

Our punches are made to be compatible with the various coatings.
TD: TD coated punches are very high performance parts, with the TD coating being highly resistant to pick-up and wear. Conventional work materials and difficult-to-work materials can be easily and cleanly punched and increases in life of up 20 times have been found. The punches are very resistant to edge chipping and breakage, and are a very cost effective, high performance solution.The TD coating is exceptionally hard (90 HRc), but very tough and can take severe punishment. The coated punches can also be sharpened and re-used. The high bonding strength of the coating ensures it remains on the sharp cutting edge without peeling, while the flank wear resistance is maintained.
PVD: PVD coated punches are specified when using highly precision punches. PVD coatings is also are highly resistant to pick-up and adhesion. PVD coatings of TiN, TiAlN and TiCN is available. with Duplex PVD, the base metal is pre-nitrided with a shallow case and PVD applied on top. This increases the support for the coating and thus improves the punch life.
The coated punches can also be sharpened and re-used. The high bonding strength of the coatings ensures it remains on the sharp cutting edge without peeling, while the flank wear resistance is maintained.
If punch life is lower than expected, we have found 99% of the time the punch-to-die clearance is incorrect. Especially if coated punches don’t perform, it is a direct indicator of excessive flank stress due to incorrect clearance. For more on punch clearance, see our Fang catalogue.
Our dies are engineered for high durability and chip resistance and to keep the cutting edge sharper for longer, They can be ordered uncoated or with coating and are exceptionally durable even when punching difficult materials such as stainless steels. The dies can be re-sharpened as the coating is only required to keep the sharp cutting edge and reduce piercing drag. Dies are also available in carbide.
Dies are made to ISO 8977 or as required.
Pilot punches are used to locate parts accurately and thus should be used with tight tolerances. However, this increases the tendency for pick-up, sticking or galling. A pilot made with the correct material and with the correct coating does not have this issue. Our pilots show extreme wear resistance, parts slide and locate easily. Critical dimensions of the pilot are also maintained for longer which assists in producing consistent parts.
Our burring punches maintain the sharpness of the piercing tip, while coatings ensure the part is highly resistant to pick-up and scoring on the forming edge. Resistance to pickup on the extruded/ironed flanks of the part also increases tap life if extruded holes are subsequently tapped.
Locating pins are used for accurately placing and locating parts. Our coated parts are very resistant to wear, scoring and loss of dimensions on the pins. Where consistent accuracy is required, such as in high precision welding operations, our range of locating pins should be used. TD has proven to be the best coating for this application.
Locating pins can be supplied to the NAAMS standard of TiN coated items. And even though we have higher temperature PVD in South Africa, our parts still conform with regards to the required hardness profiles.
We also supply weld locating pins made from Silicon Nitride. These are non-conductive, high strength materials specifically intended to eliminate sparking and avoid weld spatter form sticking.
Ejector Pins/Knockout Pins
Our ejector pins are generally made from hot work tool steel due to its inherent toughness but are not only for hot applications. Pins are supplied either coated or uncoated depending on customers requirements. Nitriding, TiN or TiAlN-Nano are mostly used for a smooth, anti-stick sliding surfaces. With the coatings/treatments, it also helps prevents wear on the ejector hole. Custom ejectors can be made such as flat blade ejectors, HSS ejectors and special diameter and length items.
Similar to ejector pins, knockout pins are used in cold to warm applications (~400 °C). With a higher base metal hardness of 58 – 60 HRc, the pins can take high stress without deforming. Pins are coated for extreme resistance to wear and pick-up, and to ensure smooth sliding and long life.
We supply mainly high performance cluster punches. These are made from conventional steels or Power Metallurgy Steels and PVD or TD coated. Customers prefer these as they are not only cheaper than the OEM parts, but also outperform them.
In addition to our standard parts, the TD Coating Centre can also manufacture custom made parts. These can either be modifications to existing standard parts or as per your required spec.
