Metal Teflon Composite

Metal Teflon Composite

A new addition to TD Coating Centre , Metal Teflon Composite or MTC is a low temperature coating that offers very good sliding, friction and release benefits where mild ,even loads are used. Dry , self-lubrication whilst also providing a corrosion barrier.

Up to 25% of the coating is made up of sub-micron sized PTFE (Poly-Tetra-Fluorine-Ethylene) or Teflon. This is held in a Nickel phosphorous layer typically 10-15 microns in thickness. MTC applies evenly at 90 °C and can be applied to aluminium, steel and copper without fear of distortion or thermal change to the base material. A uniform plating thickness develops wherever the solution contacts the part. Groves, slots, threads and even the inside of tubing can have uniform thickness of coating.

As a result of the uniformity, many post plating finishing steps such as grinding can be eliminated In plastic moulding operations, the release and anti-stick properties of MTC are excellent, resulting in improved part quality and greatly reduced cycle times. Plastic moulders have reported increases in the flow of plastic of between 4-8% as the Teflon aids in the plastic flow as well as aiding in the mechanical release of mouldings. The hydrophobic nature of the PTFE that aidsthe flow of liquid plastic also aids in the corrosion resistance and thick coating is often used to combat corrosion in PVC moulding.

In addition the increased efficiency and quieter operation for slides, bearings and cylinder/piston assemblies also provide an advantage.

  • As plated the hardness is 300-350 Hv100 (31-36 HRc)
  • Heat treating at @260 ºC for 2 hours improves the hardness to 400-450 Hv100 (42-46 HRc)
